The new contract has given the Primary Care Trust the opportunity to oversee the medical care we offer. In addition to everyday services, we also offer the following:-
A full range of contraception services is available. Teenage patients can be assured that requests for contraception will be treated in absolute confidence.
If you intend to start a family in the near future, there may be important advice we can offer which will increase the chance of you having a healthy pregnancy and baby. Latest advice is that mothers take folic acid from the time she conceives to 12 weeks. Please see your doctor.
The midwives hold clinics during surgery time by appointment, at Liskeard Community Hospital. Baby changing facilities are available, as are facilities for mothers who wish to breast feed.
Flu – Every October for patients aged 65 and over and those with diabetes, heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These patients would also benefit from a single immunisation against pneumococcal infection which causes pneumonia; this can be given at any time of year.
Blood pressure, weight and urine – when required.
Cervical smears – three to five yearly (depending on age). Reminders are sent out by letter when they are due. Those with previously abnormal results may require more frequent tests. If you are nervous, or have any concerns about this test, please discuss this with the nurse in advance. The result will be sent to you from the screening department.
Mammogram – three yearly check provided by the health authority for females between the ages of 50 and 65. Over 65s may also have a mammogram on request.
Cholesterol test – for patients who smoke, have high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart disease or have a positive family history.
Bowel Cancer Screening - offered to all in their 60's and by request only for the over 70's.
We carry out a range of minor surgery in the practice.
NEAR PATIENT TESTING AND ANTI-COAGULATION MONITORING
The surgery carries out regular blood tests on behalf of local specialists to monitor drug therapy, including anti-coagulation therapy, which would otherwise have to be done at Derriford.
There is a minor injuries unit at Liskeard Community Hospital. X-Ray facilities are available during weekday working hours.
